Club History

Naomh Colmcille CLG was formed in 1943 under the guidance of Bob Howard; playing the early years in Donnelly Hill before lapsing in the 1950’s.

Around 1961 the club was reformed at senior level but this was short lived. A few years later it was realised to have a successful club it was a matter of going back to the drawing board and start with the youth in the Grange. Playing at the AOH field a Juvenile team was entered into the Mid League under the stewardship of Harry McGrail and Paddy O’Hagan. This ground work laid the foundations for a Senior team to be formed in 1970, with success following a short time later, the winning of the Junior Championship and Division 4 titles in 1972. A feat that was matched in 1979, again winning the Junior and this time Division 3 title.

Around this time it was decided to once again look to the future and a new field and social club was invested in with the official opening taking place on 27th July 1980. This was followed by a new set of changing rooms and meeting rooms leaving us the envy of the county.

With the new facilities the good work continued on the field contesting 3 finals before finally winning the Intermediate Championship title in 1987. However with some players emigrating survival was the name of the game, before finally being relegated in 1989 to Division 3. With youth numbers dwindling that year we saw the first amalgamation of our underage teams, a scenario that we still find ourselves in this year. This led to a focus once again on our youth and success followed quickly with the U16 All County title and a second Division 3 title in 1990. This was followed by a second Intermediate Championship in 1993 and another 3rd Division title in 1998.

In the early 2000’s the writing was on the wall as the Seniors survived several relegation battles before finally being relegated back to Division 4 in 2004 for the first time since 1972. Although a barren spell for our men the Ladies team formed in 1989 showed the way with a Junior title in 2001 to go with the second Division 2 title, having won previously in 1996. At this stage the focus was once again put on the youth and the future. And like the previous trends success followed, with our men winning a Junior Championship in 2010 and our Ladies an Intermediate title in 2014. During this successful period our facilities where greatly advanced with the completion of our new Floodlit training field in 2011.
